Darth Bane's helm; the molding nightmare
Acting on the sound advice of a colleague, I carefully divided the "loops"—the negative areas that were connecting the front and back halves of the intended mold sections—in half. I cut thin plastic spacers for this purpose.
For a project of this size an assistant is invaluable. My limited work area became messy quickly, and I had to devote precious minutes to clean as I struggled to apply the molding compound to the sculpture. An assistant could help to minimalize this effort.
It would be best to have a drill with dedicated paint mixer attachment when preparing the quantity of molding material needed. Relying on hand mixing was a mistake.
When I finally set out to demold the form I found—much to my horror—that some areas did not cure. These trouble areas were pockets were the mold components had not mixed thoroughly. I salvaged the mold, but destroyed the sculpture underneath.
I was so disappointed with my mistakes in molding this form I did not take a single image for the remainder of the process.
