Detailing the Devil

It is hard to appreciate the work that goes into good special effects. Good special effects are those that don't call out the artifice involved in creating them. Hours of labour preceded this make-up test. Joe Lester is a craftsman, and nothing was left to chance.

I Subject prepared; hair darkened, special effects contacts applied, and skin cleaned for optimal application.
II Initial application; appliance is first secured brow and nose.
III More than 1 hour passes as the appliance is fitted, trimmed, glued and sealed to my facial features. In addition to my mask, Joe has created a set of demonic ears to flesh out my Devil character.
IV With surprising ease and speed, both mask and exposed neckline are painted red with a sponge and rubber mask grease paint.
V After applying a set powder, and specially made light horns, the character begins to come to life.
VII Joe Lester, with reflector, and I pause for a photograph together. Tyme 5 hours.
VIII The thing about sitting for 5 hours of sticky make-up, especially for the uninitiated, is that it tends to breed insanity. Thankfully, this was not the case for me.
