Today, 23 September, 2001, I reach a milestone in this project as the last piece from the Puzzle Project 1990--1999a is digitized. This work begun in July of 2000, represents over 300 hours of labor. In future I hope to add commentary to each piece in this project. I also intend to fill the missing positions in this project with submissions from additional artists. For the time being I shall concentrate my efforts in digitizing the Puzzle Project 1990--1999b and new submissions in Puzzle Project MMa. Thank you for your interest.

54 of the original 63 pieces from this puzzle have been returned. The 9 missing pieces are designated in solid magenta. Pieces in solid white have yet to be digitized for web viewing.

In the ten years since I began this project I never really felt the compulsion to assemble the puzzle pieces. I had regarded the pieces for the individuals that they represented. In doing such I almost forgot the one of the most elegant aspects of this project;

As in life, individual members are part of a greater whole. A given puzzle exists to be solved.

The process of reconstructing these first puzzles seemed inordinately difficult. Many of the original entrants never returned their pieces. Some of the participants used media that altered the profile of their pieces to such extent that their pieces no longer fit within the puzzle. Still other pieces were created with front and backsides reversed. To add to the confusion I kept no records as to which of the two puzzles (projects 90a and 90b) the pieces belonged. Though the first two puzzles are similar their individual pieces are not interchangeable.

Each piece requires an average of six hours to complete for use within this site. The more complex puzzle piece portraits will doubtless take longer. It occurs to me that this project will continue to grow for some time.

This is my tribute to all those who participated in this project. It truly has been a wonderful learning experience. I hope that you will enjoy this project and perhaps find inspiration in the work herein.
