To my recollection Paula was a very clean, very ordered, but very quiet person. When Paula did speak she earned my respect as a very intelligent and thoughtful individual. Reflecting on this, Paula's portrait optimizes these traits to me. The piece itself has been transformed into photo paper, with the emulsion painted directly to its surface. Her image while precisely focussed, eclipses her own mouth, losing her own voice to the void of the puzzle form. And yet Paula's eyes communicate for the missing mouth with reserve and understanding.
