: Izui Sensei
(George Kiyoshi Izui); 8th of March, 1923 -- 25th of January, 2002 Izui Sensei was an exceptional man with the most precise command of language and a modest temperament that brought balance to any given situation. Izui Sensei was not only our Kendo teacher he was the very spirit of Kendo in our Dojo. And he was my Kenyu, (Kendo friend.) Kendo is a Japanese martial way devoted to the study of the sword and sword sparring, improving one's being, and etiquette. Izui Sen Sei was renown for his sense of etiquette and tradition as well as his mild sense of humour. Izui Sensei had been physically absent from our Dojo for more than a year when Alexandra and I had an opportunity to visit him in the hospital. His body was failing, but not his mind. Much to his doctor's dismay our beloved Sensei continued to demonstrate good Kendo technique to us from his bed. He told us stories about his life and together we spoke about art and food. Not one week later we received news that our great friend had passed on. Alexandra wept openly for the loss. I smiled because I knew my teacher's was a good death, one to aspire to. Izui Sen Sei helped many a person through out his life. His being on this planet will have a lasting and positive effect. Sensei, domo arigato gazaimashita. This
