Valera was a fellow student at the Chicago Kendo Dojo. He has an amazing gift for the sport and is well admired for his talent. Valera is also an accomplished photographer. When I explained the puzzle project to Valera his eyes widened with boyish excitement. He insisted on contributing. One night after class Valera declared that his piece was finished. He then presented me with a clear box whose contents were obscured by two of his photographs, applied strategically to the top and bottom faces. Valera grinned sheepishly as I began to open the box. As soon as I lifted the lid, the box jerked violently in my hands like an angry bumble bee. Valera had made a simple booby trap out of his piece and a rubber band that unwound as the box was opened. True to form Valera had once again caught me off guard.

I was doubly surprised that Valera had elected to leave the piece in its unadulterated and pristine form. Valera later explained that after much consideration he fell in love with the piece and felt that there was no more to be done to its perfection.
